University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire

Removing Barriers and Extending the Reach

Nomination submitted by:

Dr. Brian Levin-Stankevich, Chancellor

Program Overview:

In 2002, University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire initiated an evaluation of barriers to study abroad for traditionally underrepresented groups, including students of color and students majoring in education and nursing. To extend the reach of study abroad to these students, new programs are now offered, including one in Thailand, designed for students of the campus and community’s largest minority population – Hmong Americans, and another in Costa Rica, designed for nursing majors. Since the program in Thailand began in 2004, 64% of the students have been Hmong & Hmong-American and 17% have been education or nursing majors. That same year, two new partnerships were created, one in South Africa for nursing and education majors, and another to facilitate student teaching in countries around the globe. Of the 43 students who have traveled to South Africa, 21% have been nursing or education majors and all who have participated have participated in the service-learning course.

Valdosta State University

Study Abroad Program in Guadalajara

Nomination submitted by:

Dr. Ivan Nikolov
Director of International Programs

Program Overview:

In 2002-2003, administrators of Valdosta State University’s Study Abroad Program in Guadalajara made substantial changes in their 15-year old program to better prepare students to work and live with the growing Hispanic population in Georgia. First, in effort to include students who would not otherwise study abroad, administrators opened program enrollment to non-Spanish majors. Recognizing that Spanish language acqusition and cultural understanding were also important for students from disciplines such as sociology, social work, criminal justice, nursing and education, recruitment now targets students in these disciplines, as well. In addition, administrators extended program offerings to include English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses. Named the “ESOL Endorsement,” these classes act as an add-on component of teacher certification and are aimed to make teachers more effective in the multicultural classroom. While successfully increasing diversity in study abroad, Valdosta State is also equipping students from all diciplines with skills to better serve the community in which they will soon be working.
